The trick, says David Hart is tofind an artist in early to mid-career, buy a big piece synonymous with them and keep it for 10 to 15 years. He followed his own advice and bought his father’s paintings, his father being Pro, a man who knew his way around an easel.”Dad would have given me anything I wanbted but I always paid for everything. I’d say to Dad, I’m interested in this. I don’t want any special deals. Whatever you’d sell that to a dealer for, I’ll pay you the same’.

Anne-Louise Brown | 13th June 2010

LITTLE Harry Hart, grandson of Aussie art great Pro Hart, lived every boy’s dream when he got to make a mess with stacks of food.

Harry Hart (above and below) follows in the footsteps of his dad, David, and his famous grandfather, Pro Hart.
Little Harry Hart, grandson of Aussie art great Pro Hart, lived every boy’s dream when he got to make a mess with stacks of food.

And it was all for art’s sake.

In a remake of Dupont Stainmaster carpet’s iconic 1988 advertisement, which featured Pro painting carpet, 11-year-old Harry, who lives at Tinbeerwah, got to run amok and help create one of his grandfather’s signature works, a magnificent dragonfly.

“At first I was really nervous but then I thought about it and decided it would be fun,” Harry said.

“I’ve seen the ad on TV and I think it’s really cool. So do all my friends.”

The dragonfly in the ad, which was filmed last December, was made entirely of food.

Harry said he did not do much of the work on the dragonfly featured in the ad, but said he really wanted to learn the family craft.

Painting dragonflies and his favourite cartoon character, Sponge Bob Square Pants, were at the top of his list.

According to Harry, however, the highlight of making the ad was the bottomless tray of chocolates that kept coming his way.

He also got to drink as much soft drink as he wanted.

“I think I am ready to start learning to paint and I really want to start. It would be great to paint dragonflies,” Harry said.

“It was fun making the ad too. I wouldn’t mind doing more.”

Harry’s big sister, Chloe, has already developed a following, with art collectors scrambling to buy her abstract works.

She fits in painting between school, socialising and her favourite past time, which she says is shopping.

On June 23 Harry will have another chance to perform for the camera when he appears on Hey, Hey It’s Saturday.

He will star alongside his artist father, David Hart, and during the show create another dragonfly on carpet.

Twenty years ago well known Artist & Australian Icon Pro Hart used his unique artistic flair to cover ...

Twenty years ago well known Artist & Australian Icon Pro Hart used his unique artistic flair to cover Stainmaster carpet with spaghetti & cake to form the famous “Dragonfly” that Pro Hart was best known for. This carpet commercial was rated in the top 25 best commercials of all time & will be remembered for generations to come.

Sadly in 2006 Pro passed away which was a great loss for Australian art & also his most loyal audience being his family, particularly his protégé, youngest son & now established professional artist David Hart.

It appears that not only was Pro’s remarkable talent passed onto David but it would seem that talent definitely flows down from generation to generation, now with David’s youngest son Harrison being the new face of “expressionist art”.

Harry, Pro’s 9 year old grandson was honored to be in the new generation Stainmaster Carpet commercial boosting the same art antics as his late Grandfather.

Harry Hart used unusual and innovative techniques to create his own “Dragonfly” masterpiece from food, drink and sauces. In this latest commercial Harry can be seen boogie boarding across spaghetti and using toys including a water pistol, a pair of jumping boots and a remote controlled car to apply the brushstrokes to his canvas.

As Harry decorated, his father David Hart, a highly successful painter in his own right, watched proudly from the sidelines however Harry’s mother Christine got far more involved by taking on a role in the commercial.

The new commercial brings things closer to home by having Harry’s mum discover his “dragonfly” masterpiece on the carpet. As a proud mum, Christine has no trouble admiring her son’s handiwork. Thanks to STAINMASTER® XTRA LIFE™ carpet, she also has no trouble cleaning off Harry’s masterpiece and restoring the carpet to its original, pristine condition. But perhaps the moment that makes Christine’s performance is when she takes a break from cleaning the carpet and mutters under her breath “Oh you’re too much like your grandfather”.
Whilst Pro may be gone, it’s nice to know that his spirit lives on. It’s also nice to see the spirit of the original STAINMASTER® carpet commercial so alive and well in the new version. As a man who loved his family, innovative art and STAINMASTER® carpet, we think Pro would be pleased.

IT is a vision. Long white walls, brightly-coloured canvasses and an eclectic collection of sculptures.

And now it is double the size.

On Saturday David Hart, son of iconic Australian artist Pro Hart, revealed extensions to his Mooloolaba Esplanade gallery.

The space now stretches twice its original length, displaying stunning artworks from up-and-coming and established artists Australia-wide.

“It was previously used as storage space, which we converted to gallery space,” Mr Hart said. “The best thing about the space is that it keeps on going and going. You stick your head in and you just have to walk in.”

Despite the tough economic times, Mr Hart said his Mooloolaba and Noosa galleries had thrived as people sought alternative investments.

“In the last month we’ve sold David Boyd works with a combined value of $190,000,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of new works from a variety of artists on their way.”

Anne-Louise Brown | 22nd September 2009

Chloe Hart has a gift, though at first glance she looks like any other 14-year-old girl.

With a mop of blond hair wrapped in a crude bun on top of her head, school tie undone and paint stuck to her hands, Chloe, who is shy by nature, gingerly introduces herself.

Attention makes her blush, but it is something she will have to get used to.

Chloe is a Hart – the grand-daughter of iconic Australian artist Pro Hart and daughter of his son, David, also a renowned artist and gallery owner. Now, Chloe is making her own mark.

“I’ve always painted and made things. It’s just what I do,” said Chloe, who lives with her father and mother, Christine, on their serene Tanawha property.

“The first thing I remember making that I was really proud of was a painting of flowers I did for my Year 3 teacher. It was a present for her.”

The way Chloe’s art career is going, that lucky teacher now owns a highly-prized piece of investment art.

Chloe, a Year 9 student at Sunshine Coast Christian College, sold her first painting at the age of 11 in her parents’ Noosa Hart Gallery.

Every year since she has produced three to four works, all of which have been snapped up by savvy investors. There is a waiting list for her work at present.

At the end of this month Chloe will take part in her first exhibition, which will showcase the work of three generations of Harts – Pro, David and Chloe – called Generation Next.

“My friends at school think it’s pretty cool my paintings are going to be exhibited, but it’s no big deal,” Chloe said.

“None of my friends and teachers really know about my family and their art, and it’s not something I talk about much. I don’t think my art teacher even knows.”

Chloe has travelled around the world and seen the work of many masters.

She said Egyptian hieroglyphics fascinate her, as do the intricate painting in ancient synagogues.

When asked who her favourite artist was though, her answer was simple: “My dad”.

David, who grew up surrounded by one of Australia’s foremost private art collections, said there was no pressure for Chloe to follow the family legacy and become an artist.

He knows being a Hart comes with expectation.

“I didn’t really start painting properly until I was 16, and it was then I realised I did want to be an artist,” David said.

“There is no way I’d ever push Chloe to become an artist. I think the most important thing is to create opportunities for her to discover art for herself.

“If, however, Chloe decides she wants to be an artist she will have a unique platform, which is the Hart name, she can work from.”

Chloe is not certain of the path she will follow, but it is clear she wants to pave the way developing her own distinct style.

Her work is different to the Harts who have come before her, abstract and full of colour. David calls them “action paintings”.

In the past Chloe has been commissioned to paint several iconic Hart dragonflies, but said “they’re not my thing”.

“I know that painting will always be a part of my life and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t have art,” Chloe said.

“My poppy (Pro) and dad have taught me a lot and I know I’m lucky. I just love making pretty things.”

Anne-Louise Brown | 28th May 2009

Married to successful contemporary artist David Hart, son of Pro Hart, Christine directs the day-to-day running of her husband’s galleries on the Coast.

When you are a Hart, life dictates art.

Christine Hunt wed into the Hart art family dynasty. Married to successful contemporary artist David Hart, son of Australia’s iconic Pro Hart, Christine directs the day-to-day running of her husband’s galleries at Noosa and Mooloolaba.

For Christine, investing in art came naturally, but she said those not involved in the art world were often afraid to take the plunge into investment art. But that trend was changing.

“If you’ve done your research, art is a stable and secure investment that appreciates over time,” Christine said.

“Gradually, people are becoming aware of this and are buying art to diversify their investments, even investing in art as part of their superannuation. The important thing to remember when buying art is that it’s not like buying shares: you’ve got to hold on to the piece for at least five years.”

According to Christine, one of the main advantages of buying art is that it can be enjoyed in the home and passed through generations. “When you buy a piece of art for investment it’s not something you tuck away,’’ she said.

“You hang it on your wall and enjoy it every day.

“It becomes an important part of your day-to-day life.

“David and I have kept certain special pieces that will be passed on to our children and, we hope, stay in the Hart family.

“A sector of the market we’ve noticed growth in is parents buying art as milestone gifts for their children – for weddings, birthdays and anniversaries.”

Christine said that before starting an art collection, research was vital.

She said a good way to find information was to talk to art dealers, read art publications and use the internet.

“You need to know about the artist whose work you are buying – their background and prizes they’ve won,” she said.

“By keeping up to date with art happenings, you get a sense for who emerging investment artists are and can buy their work early in their career.”

Throughout June, David Hart Gallery at Noosa will hold its 2009 Collector’s Exhibition.

Some of the works for sale come from Christine and David’s private collection, including works by Pro Hart and David Boyd.

The total value of works for sale is $845,000, with art ranging in price from $500 to $95,000.

“One of the great things about buying art is that it is accessible to most budgets,” Christine said
